Study Shows Workers’ Compensation Benefits & Employers’ Costs Rise

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) recently published a study conducted on Workers’ Compensation benefits paid out in 2011. This study showed that both the benefits paid and costs to employers increased in 2011 in comparison to years prior. Total workers’ compensation costs to employers rose to $77.1 billion (up 7.1%), while benefits rose to $60.2 billion (up 3.5%). Benefits include an increase to $29.9 billion in medical care spending (up 4.5%) and to $30.3 billion in wage replacement benefits (up 2.6%).

Marjorie Baldwin, chair of NASI’s Workers’ Compensation Data Panel noted the direct relationship between workers’ compensation and employment and earnings, addressing the tendency for “Workers’ Compensation [to] often [grow]s with the growth in employment and earnings.” When benefits and costs are measured relative to total covered wages, benefits remained unchanged, while costs to employers rose slightly, after declining in the previous 5 years.

State-level changes in coverage, benefits and employer costs in 2011 include:
 – Coverage & wages increased in all 50 states and D.C.
 – Total benefits paid to injured workers increased in 29 jurisdictions (benefits as a % of total wages increased in 17)
 – Employers’ workers’ compensation costs as a % of total wages increased in 31 states and remained unchanged in 4
 – Share of benefits paid for medical care exceeded 50% in 33 states
